How to Reach Buyers When They Are Ready to Buy

The average price of a home in my city is well over $1M. What’s amazing is that even at that price houses put on the market sell in days. We recently listed ours and within two days it sold – above asking price. I’m not going to drown you in the deep bubble of what […]

Idea fight club

I coined this phrase on my last project.  This is the simple admission that consultants should be confident in their ideas – backed up by data, research, and thinking – and be willing to allow their ideas to stand the … Continue reading

Social Disruption Starts – Today 11 Years ago

11 years ago today, someone named Mark Zuckerberg appeared on CNBC to discuss an online social network that had 100K users. Facebook quickly grew from a site run from a Harvard dorm room into the Web’s largest social network.

Mark Zuckerberg on CNBC April 29, 2004

I signed up to the network in 2005 when it started accepting users outside of the US University system. 2006 brought Facebook´s first major redesign. A news feed was added to a users´s home page and a mini feed appeared on individual profile pages.

In 2009 the news feed was replaced by a real-time stream. Facebook also asked users “What is on your mind?” prompting sharing of status updates. Facebook overhauled its profile page again in 2010, when also fan pages were introduced.

In 2011 we got the real-time activity feed ticker on the right of the screen and the same year we also got video chat, a feature I have yet not tried.  2011 also brought timelines and integration with Spotify, and on it goes…

Today Facebook is a business and networking platform for self-promotion, advertising and multimedia interaction. With new apps and add-ons, Facebook users can create and host events, advertise their businesses through social ads, and more. Clearly Facebook turned into a disruptive innovation, disruption social interaction and the way we promote ourselves and our businesses.

The theory of disruptive innovation was introduced by Clayton Christensen, of Harvard Business School, in his book “The Innovator’s Dilemma” in 1997. Christensen used the term to describe innovations that create new markets by discovering new categories of customers. They do this partly by harnessing new technologies but also by developing new business models and exploiting old technologies in new ways.

Christensen contrasted disruptive innovation with incremental or sustaining innovation, which simply improves existing products. Personal computers, for example, were disruptive innovations because they created a new mass market for computers. Previously, expensive mainframe computers had been sold only to big companies and research universities.

Disruptive innovations usually find their first customers in a niche or at the bottom of the market. As unproved, often unpolished, products, they cannot command a high price. Incumbents are often complacent and slow to recognise the threat that their inferior competitors pose.

But as successive refinements improve them to the point that they start to steal customers, they may end up reshaping entire industries. Some examples are classified ads (Craigslist), long distance calls (Skype), record stores (iTunes), research libraries (Google), local stores (eBay), taxis (Uber), newspapers (Twitter) and social interaction (Facebook). So, where will Mr Zuckerberg go next?

Consulting manager: dictator mode vs. democracy mode

Increasingly, I have been using this simple, but stark, analogy to talk about team management.  Increasingly, seems like there are two ways to get outcomes. Democracy mode (what do you think?) Dictator mode (do what I say) As a manager, I want to … Continue reading

Secrets of Corporate Longevity

Built to Last It is yet again Friday, and maybe time for some off topic thoughts for the weekend. One of the best books about corporate development in my bookshelf is Built to Last by Jim Collins, of Good to Great fame. The book outlines the results of a six-year research project into what makes enduring great companies.

According to the author, lasting companies have taken leadership roles in their industries, offering innovative products and services and consistently outsmarted rivals. What makes the research interesting is that Collins compares and contrasts visionary companies with their rivals.

What does it take for a company to survive through generations, for decades or for centuries? Long lived companies do good in society and fills a greater purpose than their own mission statements. They establish roots in communities, they provide stability and employment and as workers grow up through the business and retire, they provide a link through generations.

Oldest Companies One of the oldest companies in the world is the Japanese hotel Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan founded in 705, listed in Guinness Book of Records. Looking at larger organisations in the world, the list on the right is commonly considered to be accurate.

For more thoughts on the topic, here is a link to the highly readable document “Built to Become – Corporate Longevity and Strategic Leadership*, by Professor Robert A. Burgelman at Stanford.

In the video below, Financial Times explores corporate longevity through the example of businesses in Hong Kong.

How Exponential Technologies Will Disrupt the World

Peter H. Diamandis At the World Economic Forum in January this year, Peter H. Diamandis gave the interesting speech below. He is the founder of the Singularity University, a response to the need for continuous, lifelong learning among professionals in today’s working world.

He is also the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think. In the book, Diamandis argues, we could be at the threshold of a future where nine billion people have access to clean water, food, energy, health care, education, and everything else that is necessary for a first world standard of living, thanks to technological innovation. But only if we manage the opportunity well.

In the speech at the WEF, Diamandis talks about the current pace of change, the opportunities and challenge of todays hyper competitive world, and he says we should beware the Kodak moment. We all need to wake up to the potential threats and opportunities of disruptive technologies.

According to Diamandis, influence on the direction of change is not limited to the elite, it is open to anyone who cares and has a passion and understanding of the opportunities of new, converging exponentially developing technologies.
