Nairobi Railway City Conference

IMG_4182Bearing have this week attended and presented at an important conference in Kenya, hosted by United Nations Habitat. The purpose of the conference was to agree a strategic action plan on a key piece of former railway land adjacent to the Nairobi Central Business District.

Senior representatives from Bearing met with their counterparts from the Kenyan Railway Corporation, UN Habitat, the Nairobi City Administration and the Kenyan National Government to discuss how the site can be best utilised in a sustainable and efficient manner, taking into consideration the challenges of this fast expanding city.

The two day conference and workshop took place at the Naivasha Lakes north of the Capital and led to consensus of the need to work together in order to generate best value for this once in a lifetime redevelopment opportunity.

Alongside other world class experts, including Dr. Yoel Siegel, Senior Expert to UN Habitat  on Urban Redevelopment, Brian Halusan, the Deputy Director of New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and Marco Kamiya, UN Habitat´s Unit Leader for Urban Economy and City Finance,  Bearing presented Place Management case studies from the around the world and carried out an initial risk workshop in what became an enjoyable and interactive discussion with the more than 30 participants.

The next stage of the project will include a study visit of a Kenyan delegation to Stockholm, where they will see for themselves the possibilities of transport infrastructure redevelopment in the Swedish capital.
